On the Waterfront: Conversation w/ Charlie Sheldon   2/21/2012
The Port of Bellingham plays a vital role in the economic development of Whatcom County. Supported by tax revenues, the Port manages transportation in the area, holds a sizeable real-estate portfolio and is charged with creating jobs in the private sector. Charlie Sheldon was named Executive Director of the Port in October of 2010, succeeding long-time ED Jim Darling. It's been somewhat of a bumpy ride so far - the Port is involved in an ongoing airport expansion and the redevelopment of the former Georgia Pacific mill site on the downtown waterfront, a controversial effort that has been challenged by the economic decline that has occurred since planning began. ...

Reefnet Salmon Fishery Yielding Record Hauls   10/21/2011
As the regional, unique reefnet fishery takes a break before resuming in October to catch Coho and chum, reports abound of the largest catches in recent history and, in some cases, ever among the fishers. Locker: R&D of an NFL QB   9/21/2011
Jake Locker from Ferndale, Wash., played in three regular season NFL games during his rookie season with the Tennessee Titans as their No. 1 draft selection. As back-up to Matt Hasselbeck, Locker completed 51.5 percent of his passes, threw for four touchdowns and ran for one, and had a QB rating of 99.4.

Vince Lalonde is an artist. A bicycling enthusiast. A quintessential greeter. And a whirling dervish on the business scene.

He owns and manages Mount Bakery, a highly-popular downtown destination in Bellingham for not only baked goods, but creative quiche and sandwich and soup offerings. Mount Bakery entered August on the move – about to open an additional locations, for baked goods only, in Fairhaven. The shop opened during the last week in August.

Meet an Artist Who Sells: Jody Bergsma   8/8/2011

While there are many artists in northwest Washington, few have achieved the level of success enjoyed by Bellingham’s Jody Bergsma.

Jody began by creating illustrations for children and has become a veritable one-woman art industry, producing paintings, greeting cards, collector’s plates, children’s books, t-shirts, towels, figurines – the list goes on and on. Internationally known, she maintains a showroom in the Haskell Business Center in Bellingham. When she’s not busily producing art or running her global art business, she can often be found on horseback, a favorite way to unwind.

COMMERCIAL FISHING: Think Alaska Salmon   7/21/2011
In our July print edition, which you can read in the archives of the digital version on line, we investigated the state of commercial fishing in the northern Puget Sound regions and discovered some surprising results. Contrary to some public perceptions, the industry is not dead by a long shot. Several sources, such as some Washington state wildlife authorities and Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association (NSEA), said that the general public has many erroneous ideas about a perceived decline in fishing for income hereabouts.
