HENIFIN, RANEY WIN AWARDS

Business owner Lynne Henifin was named Whatcom County 2008 Professional Woman of the Year during the 26th annual Whatcom Women in Business (WWIB) banquet and auction on Oct. 21 at the Bellingham Country Club.
Additionally, Becky Raney co-owner of Print and Copy Factory in Bellingham and a long-time member of WWIB, was awarded the WWIB Member of the Year award for her service to the group in a variety of roles.
Henifin is manager and co-owner of five companies: NW Safety Signs, Henifin Construction, Complete Trade Services and two real estate development LLCs. She manages finances and oversees operations for Safety Signs, security, taxes and rental properties and is also involved in a variety of volunteer projects in the community.

MCCULLOUGH, MORGAN PROMOTED BY BUSINESS BANK

Jeremy McCullough of Mount Vernon has been promoted to vice president of commercial lending by Business Bank, and Tyson Morgan of Ferndale has been promoted to assistant vice president of agricultural lending.
McCullough, who works out of the Burlington office, joined Business Bank in 2006 as manager of business development. He is a graduate of the ICBA Commercial Lending Institute and has been in an in-house commercial lending training program for the past year. He has a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Washington and his community involvement includes Leadership Skagit, Skagit Young Professionals and Burlington Chamber of Commerce.
Tyson, who works out of the Lynden branch, joined Business Bank in 2007 as a trainee in agricultural lending. He attended Whatcom Community College, completed numerous courses from the American Institute of Banking and contributed to the successful opening of the full-service branch in Lynden.

CHYLINSKI ANALYZES CREDIT for bank of the pacific

David Chylinski has been hired by The Bank of the Pacific to serve as a credit analyst in the commercial banking department in Bellingham.
Chylinski recently graduated magna cum laude from Western Washington University, with the designation of outstanding graduate from the finance and marketing department. He was involved in numerous honor societies, including Phi Kappa Phi, Beta Gamma Sigma and Golden Key, and supervised a staff of 30 students at the Student Recreation Center.

Broadway Chiropractic Adds Acupuncturist to Wellness Team

Belligham’s Broadway Chiropractic, owned by Theresa Murry, D.C., has added acupuncturist Heather Falkenbury to its team. Falkenbury joins Broadway Chiropractic with a master’s degree in acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine from Seattle’s Bastyr University, as well as the completion of an intensive course study of Chinese herbal medicine at Chengdu’s College of Traditional Medicine in China. She is nationally certified, and in addition to utlizing acupuncture as a primary treatment, will intregrate chiropractic and massage therapy as part of her comprehensive approach to healing.

TEMPLETON SPEAKS AT GREEN CONFERENCE

Susan Templeton, a local mortgage planner and owner of Loannetter, spoke about green mortgages at the Fall Green Home and Living Expo on Nov. 1 at the Bellingham Cruise Terminal.
Templeton specializes in working with fist-time buyers, veterans and homeowners either building or renovating their homes. She speaks regularly at public events celebrating the Pacific Northwest lifestyle and is a member of the National Association of Mortgage Fiduciaries, The Ethical Lending Foundation and the National Association of Mortgage Brokers.
The event, sponsored by the local Built Green division of the Building Industry Association of Whatcom County, featured a free public expo for homeowners.

BOWTHORPE HONORED FOR OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT

Kimberlee Bowthorpe of Ferndale received an award from AtHome America for working a successful business during the company’s annual sales convention Salute 2008.
Bowthorpe, an independent sales contractor known as a HomeStyle specialist, joined AtHome America in 2004. She was recognized for lifetime achievement in reaching $100,000 in personal sales as a top HomeStyle specialist with high personal and team sales.

FERNDALE DEALER SPEAKS AT NATIONAL EXPO

Carl Levien of Carl’s Mower & Saw Inc. of Ferndale spoke at the annual Green Industry and Equipment Expo in October in Louisville, Ky.
Levien, winner of the 2007 Dealer In Excellence award from the 4,000-member Lawn and Garden Association, joined three other panel members to present a talk on “Successful Business Planning 101.” He has spent the past five years learning to manage and grow his business. He hopes to expand his business in the near future to include electric mower offerings.

HICKMAN WINS AWARD

Mary Hickman, Premier Aussie specialist, received an Opal Award for the Best Niche Itinerary at the annual meeting of Aussie Specialists at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Los Angeles.
The award recognizes Hickman, an affiliate with Bellingham Travel and Cruise, as one of the top five Aussie Specialists in the United States by Tourism Australia. It is given to a specialist who demonstrates an extensive knowledge of Australia, as well as creativity in devising a complex itinerary to meet the budget, interests and requests of their clients.

RANGER EXCELS IN TOYOTA PROGRAM, EARNS DEGREE

John Ranger of Foothills Toyota Scion in Burlington, graduated from the Toyota Technical Education Network (T-TEN) program through Shoreline Community College in September.
Ranger also gained distinction in the automotive service curriculum by earning an associate’s degree, while completing the T-TEN program and graduating with the designation of both Toyota Expert Technician and ASE Master Technician.
Before graduating from Shoreline, Ranger was the first student from Burlington Edison High School to become an intern at Foothills Toyota. He also received an “Opportunity Grant,” a pilot grant developed by the State of Washington identifying specific careers that are soon becoming high demand employment opportunities as baby boomers begin to retire, such as automotive technicians. Although the grant only required Ranger to complete the automotive program, he also completed his college degree and successfully passed all eight automotive technical skill-level tests with 100 percent accuracy.
Ranger now works as a full-time Toyota certified automotive technician. He also will eventually become a mentor to a new student.

CAILLOUX NAMED WORKFORCE EDUCATION DEAN AT SVC

Laura Cailloux is the new dean of Workforce Education at Skagit Valley College (SVC), where she is responsible for managing the college’s 26 professional and technical programs.
Cailloux served as interim dean for the program during the 2007-2008 academic year. She has served SVC for 11 years as the Business and Community Development director and as an instructor/department chairwoman for the business management program. She has received numerous leadership awards, including the 2005 Skagit Women’s Alliance Network (SWAN) Business and Professional Woman of the Year, and earned a master’s degree in business administration (MBA) from Portland State University.

MARR PROMOTED TO SUPERVISOR AT ICU

Chelsea Marr has been promoted to supervisor of the Industrial Credit Union’s (ICU) Fred Meyer branch in Bellingham.
Marr, who has four years of experience at ICU, now oversees the branch’s auto and consumer loans, plus personal and business banking services. She also supervises four employees.

KORTLEVER NAMED SALES STAR

Janell Kortlever, licensed mortgage advisor at Neighborhood Mortgage, has been honored as the company’s Third Quarter Sales Star.
Kortlever consistently demonstrates leadership, community involvement and sales excellence. She also serves on boards for the Blaine Chamber of Commerce and Blaine Boys and Girls Club.

HART DIRECTS ALLIED ARTS

Kelly Hart has been hired as the new executive director of Allied Arts for Whatcom County by the executive board.
Hart, who began her role in mid-September, has more than 15 years experience in arts management. Her career includes gallery administration and sales as an assistant at Gail Severn Gallery, and later director at the Kneeland Gallery, both in Sun Valley, Idaho, and executive director of the Buhl Arts Council in South Central Idaho.

LINDQUIST JOINS WHIDBEY ISLAND BANK

Kristi Lindquist has joined Whidbey Island Bank as a real estate loan officer.
Lindquist is based at the Anacortes branch, and will cover both Anacortes and the Friday Harbor real estate loan offices.
The Anacortes resident has more than 19 years of experience in the banking industry, in management and as a loan officer.

MCMULLEN NAMED SECRETARY BY WYPS

Christina McMullen has been named advisory council secretary by Whatcom Young Professionals, a division of the Bellingham/Whatcom Chamber of Commerce & Industry.
McMullen is a marketing associate at Snapper Schuler Kenner. She brings board experience from the Barkley Business Association, where she currently serves as the association’s secretary. McMullen also is involved in the Women’s Professional Network.

GORDON, O’DONNELL, SANDS JOIN RE/MAX

Scott Gordon, Dan O’Donnell and Jim Sands moved to the Bellingham office of RE/MAX Whatcom County.
Gordon has more than 10 years of real estate experience, especially with buyers, and is a lifetime member of the sales master club and a consistent top producer, while selling in Utah, California and Washington.
O’Donnell, a Whatcom County native, has been licensed since 2001.
Sands, also a Whatcom County native, has 25 years experience in owning and managing businesses in Bellingham. He specializes in residential and commercial sales. In 2007, he earned his license. He also is a graduate of the Real Estate Institute, a Certified Negotiating Expert and a member of the Commercial Broker Association.

BOTTS, CRONEY, SMITH JOIN PIONEER FORD

Pioneer Ford in Lynden has expanded its service department by appointing Jim Botts as service manager and hiring service consultants Luke Croney and Brian Smith.
Botts manages a 15-person service department, which includes nine technicians, and handles all makes and models. He has 22 years of experience in vehicle service departments with Ford and Chevrolet dealerships.
Croney, a Lynden resident, spent the last 10 years in the service department of a Bellingham dealership.
Smith, a Whatcom County native and a Sehome High School graduate, also has 10 years of experience in service departments.

FASSETT, FLOWERS ADDED TO FUNERAL HOME PROGRAM

Scott Fassett of Ferndale and Brian Flowers of Everson have joined Moles Family Funeral Homes & Crematory as family service advisers in an effort to meet the rising interest in pre-planning funerals by baby boomers and others.
Fassett serves families primarily through Moles-Bayview Chapel in Bellingham. He has worked with Whatcom County families and business professionals in a variety of arenas, including office equipment support and real estate. He has served on the Bellingham Theatre Guild Board of Directors and is a member of Cornerstone Community Church.
Flowers serves through the Moles-Ferndale and Moles-Greenacres Memorial Park offices. The Whatcom County native attended Western Washington University and has managed and provided for all aspects of care and support for developmentally disabled adults. In addition, he is a professional storyteller and a founding member of the Bellingham Storytellers Guild, where he regularly participates in performance fundraisers for local nonprofit organizations such as Whatcom Land Trust and Three Rivers School.

THREE APPOINTED TO COLLEGE BOARDS OF TRUSTEES

Debra Lisser of Mount Vernon, Timothy Douglas of Bellingham and Sonia Arevalo-Hayes of Ferndale have been appointed by Gov. Chris Gregoire to various college boards of trustees. Their terms began Oct. 1, 2008, and will end Sept. 30, 2013.
Lisser has been reappointed to Community College District No. 4 (Skagit Valley College). She works at Lisser & Associates PLLC, a land surveying business, serves as president-elect of the Trustees Association of Community and Technical Colleges and is a former Conway School Board member.
Douglas has been appointed to Community College District No. 21 (Whatcom Community College). He was mayor of the city of Bellingham and a Peace Corps director and has served as a board member for organizations such as Kulshan Community Land Trust and Whatcom Coalition for Healthy Communities.
Arevalo-Hayes has been reappointed to Community College District No. 25 (Bellingham Technical College). She is co-owner of TC Trading Co. and a member of the Marine Hotel Association, Whatcom Hispanic Organization and Washington Latino Business Association.

HENDRICKS, MOUAT ADDED TO EDWARD JONES OFFICE

Financial advisers Brett Hendricks and Will Mouat have joined the Edward Jones office in Lynden’s Bender Plaza.
Hendricks, a Lynden native, graduated from Lynden Christian High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Dordt College. He managed a local construction company for five years and served in sales and marketing for three years at a local lumberyard.
Mouat transferred from the Edward Jones office in La Grande, Ore., to return to the area where he was raised as a youth. He became a high school teacher and then joined the U.S. Navy after the 9-11 terrorism attacks and served as a naval intelligence officer for five years.
Both Hendricks and Mouat assist clients formerly served by Brian Smith, who has accepted a promotion to an Edward Jones office in Crescent City, Calif., to be closer to family members.

CHANGES AT NORTHWEST YOUTH SERVICES

Anne Larson is the new executive director for Northwest Youth Services, and Sonya Samuelson has been hired as donor and community relations manager.
Larson began her duties in May, after Executive Director David Webster left the organization to become chief administrative officer for the City of Bellingham. She previously served as both the associate director and clinical director at Northwest Youth Services for four years and has been a resident of Bellingham for 20 years.
Originally from Anchorage, Alaska, Samuelson graduated from the University of Oregon with a bachelor’s degree in journalism, with an emphasis in public relations. Prior to her position at Northwest Youth Services, she was the promotions and marketing director for Chilkoot Charlie’s, a large nightclub in Anchorage, for six years and then the executive director at the United Way of Grays Harbor in Aberdeen.

FINALISTS NAMED FOR ABOVE & BEYOND FOR KIDS AWARD

Five finalists have been selected from more than 50 nominees by Northwest Youth Services for consideration of the 2008 Above & Beyond for Kids Award.
Persons could be nominated in one of four categories: youth, adult, service club/government/nonprofit and business/corporation.
The finalists are:
• The teen team of Becki Cronk, Tami Flett and Kim Donk at the ARC of Whatcom County’s Youth Self-Advocacy Program. This group of volunteers provides creative support and self-expression projects for persons with developmental disabilities.
• Superior Court Judge Charles Snyder, who has launched and supported a series of youth-oriented legal programs and community strategies for giving youth a voice. Judge Snyder is also a volunteer mentor at Washington Boy’s State and has served numerous nonprofit boards and service clubs.
• Becky Robertson, a Nooksack Valley School District Family Services specialist, who for 15 years has earned rave reviews for her advocacy and support of children and families, including commendable efforts in support of immigrant families.
• The volunteer crew of Dane Vennewitz and Manis Pierre at Lydia’s Place Children’s Program; they both serve as role models in helping those families and individuals dealing with crisis.
• Trevor Press, a Fairhaven Middle School student and youth volunteer from Congregation Beth Israel, who provides weekly support of a young man with autism under the Autism Treatment Center of America’s Son Rise Program.

MCBEATH, WEAVER HONORED BY WCAR

Matt McBeath of RE/MAX Whatcom County and Sandy Weaver of Chicago Title received third-quarter awards from the Whatcom County Association of Realtors (WCAR).
McBeath was named WCAR’s Realtor of the Third Quarter. The Whatcom County native has five years of real estate experience and earned the designation of Accredited Buyer Representative last year. He has served this year as a WCAR director and chairman of its 100-year anniversary committee. McBeath also contributed many hours to a revision of the organization’s bylaws.
Weaver was named as WCAR’s Affiliate of the Third Quarter. She has been in the real estate industry for 18 years, including the last 10 years as sales manager of Chicago Title’s Bellingham office. She has volunteered for Domestic Violence and Assault Services of Whatcom County and served WCAR in positions involving its awards committee, golf tournaments, installation banquet and state convention.

ZORO, WALKER SELECTED FOR WATERFRONT DEVELOPMENT BOARD

Western Washington University (WWU) Board Trustee Peggy Zoro has been selected by the trustees to serve as its representative on the board for the new development entity that will work with the Port of Bellingham on Western’s expansion to the waterfront. The Port Commission, which partnered with the trustees to form the entity, selected Port Commissioner Scott Walker as its representative on the development entity board.
Zoro, appointed to Western’s Board of Trustees by Gov. Gary Locke in 2003, is currently senior vice president and regional manager of Wells Fargo Bank’s Wealth Management Group for the North Puget Sound Region.

PETERS JOINS LEEPER’S MARINE

Marine technician Lloyd Peters has joined Leeper’s Marine in Bellingham.
Peters handles repairs to boats, engines and trailers, plus boat winterizing and installation of electrical components. He has nearly five years of experience as a technician at Olympic Boat Centers in Bellingham and has earned a pair of certifications from Mercury Marine.

PACKARD ADDED TO LARSON GROSS TEAM

CPA Ann Packard has been added to the expanded team of professionals at Larson Gross’ Lynden office.
Packard recently relocated to Deming after spending more than eight years in private industry accounting positions in Idaho and California. She has experience as a controller and accounting manager, as well as public accounting, and a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Brigham Young University.

REECK, ANDERSON PROMOTED TO PLANT MANAGERS

Brooks Manufacturing in Bellingham has promoted Philip Reeck to plant manager and Marla Anderson to assistant plant manager. They have more than 45 years combined experience in manufacturing.
Reeck is in charge of overall production, orders and quality control. He has been with Brooks Manufacturing for more than seven years and served as assistant plant manager for the 18 months prior to his promotion. Prior to joining Brooks, he worked more than 22 years in Georgia Pacific’s shipping department.
Anderson, who joined Brooks in January of 2008 as shipping manager, supervises employees, as well as monitors overall plant production and workflow. She also previously worked at Georgia Pacific, serving 18 years in a variety of roles that ranged from accountant to shift supervisor.

HARGROVE FOCUSES ON HEALTH, EXERCISE IN NEW JOB

Brian Hargrove has joined Health and Exercise Prescriptions in Bellingham.
The 11-year Bellingham resident has been involved in the fitness industry for more than three years and has experience with a wide variety of clients, ranging from healthy individuals to those with special medical needs. He has his Personal Trainer Certification through the American Council on Exercise (ACE), plays on the local Chuckanut Bay Rugby Club and serves on the club’s board of directors.

MASLAND RELEASES NEW BOOK Benefitting YWCA PROGRAM

Author Lynne Masland released her new book, “100 Years of Challenge and Change,” during a reception Nov. 13 at the YWCA in Bellingham. Thanks to local businesses, all proceeds from the book sales will support the YWCA transitional housing program.
Masland’s history book traces the impact on Whatcom County women of the suffrage movement, Great Depression, two World Wars, the tumultuous 1960s, and the surge of women’s employment from the 1970s to the present.
Underwriters of the book are ConocoPhillips Ferndale Refinery, which matched in full a Washington Women’s History Consortium grant. Additional support came from WECU and Bellingham Sunrise Rotary, with in-kind support from LithtexNW and Credo Graphics of Mount Vernon.
Masland, who volunteered 18 months of research and writing, has a doctorate in comparative literature from the University of British Columbia where her research focused on the portrayal of older women in literature. She retired from Western Washington University as director of University Communications and adjunct faculty.
